Reader’s question:

I recently graduated from UC Berkley, and now I don’t have health insurance. What can I do?

-Alicia

That’s a good question, Alicia.

A lot of the people today who are listed as being without health insurance are in fact individuals who, like you, are in a state of flux. They have lost a spouse, for example, or they have recently turned 25 and can no longer be listed as a dependent.

Luckily, California State Health Insurance can provide special assistance to individuals like you who have recently graduated or come of age and can no longer qualify for their parent’s health insurance plan. A plan called COBRA, provided by the California State Health Insurance Department, can help until you get back on your feet. COBRA extends your family health insurance plan for up to 36 months while you get back on your feet.

In the interim, you can work on finding a job. Most jobs won’t provide health insurance until you’ve been working for 6 months, so COBRA will help you stay covered until your new job’s health insurance kicked in.
